Current Research Initiative

We are currently supporting research being conducted by the Canine Genetics Laboratory at the University of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine (under the direction of Dr. Martin Katz, Ph.D.). My quest for answers following Savvy's death eventually led me to Dr. Katz and his Canine Genetics Laboratory. I learned from Dr. Katz that, even though the cause of these idiopathic seizures is not currently known, he thinks that it is possible to develop a DNA test that could be used to screen Rottweilers prior to making breeding decisions. In other words, I learned that while we can’t cure this condition once it occurs, we can do something to eradicate it from our beloved breed. Epilepsy research has been done (and is ongoing) with respect to other breeds, but we are not aware of any research studies other than Dr. Katz's focusing exclusively on Rottweilers. As breeders, owners, and those who love the Rottweiler breed and are committed to protecting and advancing the breed, it is up to us to make sure this happens!

As I understand the science, Dr. Katz's research first requires the submission of a sufficient number of DNA samples from Rottweilers that have experienced idiopathic seizures (as well as samples from unaffected but related dogs). Once they receive a sufficient number of samples, Dr. Katz believes they will be able to isolate the specific genetic mutation that is associated with this disorder. As noted on our "Breeding" page, this has been done with respect to seizures in other breeds. If this research is successful, they hope to then develop a test by which Rottweilers can be screened, prior to breeding, to determine whether they carry this mutation.

Dr. Katz's research is currently seeking funding in part by the Rottweiler Health Foundation, a free standing charitable organization with the objective of improving the health status of the Rottweiler breed. Still, additional financial resources will required if the work is to continue through completion. Project SAV encourages those who are interested and able to contribute financially to Dr. Katz's research, by giving to the Foundation specifically for that program. The Foundation is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) Public Benefit Corporation, therefore donations are tax-deductible. To donate in support of this research, through the Foundation, click the link below.
